• Pacifism is the belief that any violence is unjustifiable under all circumstances. The 3LP does not adopt such a position. Indeed, many people in the 3L Movement believe strongly in the use of violence but only as justified self-defense in response to another’s aggressing. That said, the 3LP does not require anyone to employ self-defense even when it is justified. As such, the 3L Movement remains open and welcoming to pacifists and believers in self-defense alike.
  • Pacifism engages creative thinking to resolve conflicts rather than resorting to brute force, which aligns with 3L’s Aspirational Values. But pacifism often results in a lack of deterrence for aggressors. 3L Members generally support a strong and capable national defense to negotiate with aggressors from a position of strength. The 3LP supports an absolute right to self-defense for all who choose to employ force to defend themselves or others.
  • Peace through strength is a wise strategy summed up by the words of George Washington: “To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.” (’FAFO’!)
